IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Global reach has made access to foreign resources easier. These days, people can go to their local supermarket and find food items from all over the world. I think this is an extremely positive development.
The disadvantages of this are minuscule. For instance, exporting foreign food products might cost the exporter more money. The transportation of these items might be difficult due to international laws. Nonetheless, the positive sides definitely outweigh the negative parts.
Different countries have different environment and hence different cultivating atmosphere. For this reason, certain food products such as fruits or fresh produce cannot be found in other countries. These food items are imported to all over the world. When consumers go to the supermarkets they can find a variety of food items. This adds variety in their dietary plans and also provide them with seasonal produce from other countries. Mango, which is a popular summer fruit in Bangladesh and Thailand, is rarely found in other colder countries. Imported mangoes can give the consumers a taste of something different and also nutritious. Packaged food like snacks are most commonly found in supermarkets. But fresh produce like fish, meat and vegetables are also found there.
Moreover, governments can initiate import-export contracts and build an international relationship with foreign countries. Importing food from all over the world also attracts a lot of tourists. They get to experience the cuisine of a lot of other places while visiting one country. Most tourists that go to Europe get to try food from India, Bangladesh, Japan etc. Some supermarkets also expand their business by establishing branches in other countries. Many tourists go to these stores to specifically find food from those countries.
In conclusion, I find that the positives outweigh the negatives impeccably. More and more foreign food products should be imported and exported all over the world to give the consumers a chance to taste them instead of watching the advertisements for them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you consider worldwide food availability “an extremely positive development,” and you acknowledge possible costs and regulatory difficulties before arguing that benefits outweigh them. The discussion of dietary variety and access to seasonal produce is relevant, with the mango example helping to illustrate the point. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others. The claim that imports “attract a lot of tourists” and the discussion of supermarket branches are not clearly explained as consequences of global food availability, and the conclusion’s reference to advertisements adds little support. Develop the strongest benefits with clearer cause-and-effect reasoning and explain how they affect consumers.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, the body paragraphs present drawbacks and benefits, and the conclusion restates your position. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, and signposts such as “For instance,” “Nonetheless,” and “Moreover” help readers follow the discussion. At times, however, connections between ideas are not fully clear. The move from imported food to tourism and then to supermarket branches feels abrupt, while “These food items are imported to all over the world” does not clearly link to the preceding explanation. Some linking phrases also make the progression feel formulaic. Group related points together and use explicit references to show how each example supports your central argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “international laws,” “seasonal produce,” “dietary plans,” and “import-export contracts.” These choices help communicate your main points, and the meaning remains clear. There are also attempts at less common or emphatic wording, but some combinations are imprecise or unnatural: “different cultivating atmosphere,” “imported to all over the world,” and “outweigh the negative parts.” “Impeccably” is also an awkward choice for describing the balance of advantages and disadvantages. Aim for more natural collocations and precise terms, such as describing differences in climate and growing conditions, or saying that products are imported into many countries. This would make the argument sound more fluent and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the conditional “When consumers go to the supermarkets…” and the relative clause “Mango, which is a popular summer fruit…”. Most sentences are understandable, and errors rarely obstruct your meaning. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, particularly with agreement and sentence construction. For example, “different environment” needs a plural form or an article, and “This adds variety … and also provide them” shifts from a singular subject to a plural verb. In “These food items are imported to all over the world,” the preposition pattern is faulty. Review subject–verb agreement and prepositions, and proofread longer sentences to ensure that each clause is grammatically complete and clearly connected.
