Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, super markets are gaining popularity. Although, It has some advantages, It also has some disadvantages. This essay will discuss both positive and negative sides of super markets.

On the one hand, super markets made people's lives easier. It brought many positive changes in consumer's lives. The main reason is that people can buy every food which produces all over the world. With the aid of these markets, people can buy their favourite food items without any difficulty. It also helps countries to increase their economies due to different range of food products. For example, all countries are diverse, people from differnt backgrounds usually lives there. So, with the help of super markets they can get their national products without any effort or difficulty. Therefore, it is understandable why some people support this view.

On the other hand, super markets also bring some disadvantages. It directly effects the local shops or businesses. Due to these markets , it is hard for small businesses to compete them. It also effects so many people who wants to support their families. For instance, If super markets are available everywhere, people may go to super markets for shopping instead of short distance local shops. As a result, other arguments are also convincing. In my opinion, we should go to super markets for shopping, but we should not take local shops for granted. It creates job opportunities to local people.

To sum up, super markets have both positive and negative sides. But, it's positive side is greater. Although, it offers many benefits such as national products, international food items etc. But, we should consider the local businesses and support them in a better way.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address the question by presenting benefits and drawbacks and stating a preference: “it’s positive side is greater.” The points about access to international foods and pressure on local shops are relevant, and the example of people finding familiar national products gives some support. However, the response discusses supermarkets generally rather than consistently focusing on the specific development of being able to buy food produced worldwide. The economic benefit is asserted but not explained, and the local-business concern is not clearly connected to imported food. Your position also becomes less decisive when you say shoppers should use supermarkets but not take local shops for granted. Develop a clearer judgement and explain how the global availability of food affects consumers, producers, or communities.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To sum up” make the overall direction easy to follow. However, some linking is mechanical, and phrases such as “Therefore, it is understandable why some people support this view” and “As a result, other arguments are also convincing” do not clearly show how the preceding point leads to the next. The conclusion repeats the two-sided framing rather than bringing the main reasoning together. Improve progression by linking each example directly to its claim and using clearer references, especially when shifting from supermarket access to local businesses.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “consumer’s lives,” “food products,” “local shops,” and “job opportunities.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “diverse” and “national products.” However, vocabulary is repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “super markets,” “difficulty,” and “positive and negative sides.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unclear, including “different range of food products,” “effects the local shops,” and “take local shops for granted.” Spelling errors such as “differnt” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise range for discussing global food supply and local economies, and check spelling and collocations when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a concession in “Although it offers many benefits…” and a conditional example beginning “If super markets are available everywhere.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between ideas harder to follow. Examples include “It brought many positive changes” after the present-tense opening, “people … usually lives,” and “people who wants,” where tense or subject–verb agreement is faulty. Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need attention: “Although, It has some advantages, It also has some disadvantages” contains incorrect punctuation and capitalisation, while the final “Although” clause is left without a complete main clause. Practise accurate agreement and complete sentence structures before adding more complex forms.
