In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many nations at the present, consumers and buyers can now go to a supermarket and find food produced globally. I think this a positive development in international society because of the diversity of food types they can consume.

Nowadays, if you go into any hypermarkets with a lot of edible products, you could find international products from all over the world. This might create some confussion for the consumer not knowing what to buy due to the increased amount of choices he have. For example, instead of having two types of chips, we now have more than ten, which can frustrate the buyer into what to buy exactly.

However, having diversity in choices and new kinds of food could create new opportunities by making international people taste other cultures food. Mahshy, an Egyptian dish, for instance, has become really famous in the USA for its delicious taste, and it made american people tend to explore the Egyptian cuisine more. Food that is produced all over the world could also increase the global economy by importing and outsourcing food from and outside the country. The Egyptian economy, for example, got enhanced significantly just by buying Egyptian trademark dishes as food products to European countries.

In conclusion, although the diversity and imports of global food can sometimes be confusing and overwhelming for the consumers, it can really benefit a one's taste and makes him try things from different cultures. Additionally, sharing and having food all over the world can rise a country's economy by sending their local food abroad.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you consider worldwide food availability positive, mainly because it exposes consumers to other cultures and can support economies. You also acknowledge a relevant drawback—too much choice can confuse shoppers—so the response addresses both sides of the question. The examples of Egyptian mahshy in the USA and Egyptian food exports help make your points concrete. However, the discussion of consumer confusion is more fully explained than the economic benefit, and the claim that the Egyptian economy was “enhanced significantly” is not supported with detail. Develop this point by explaining how exports benefit producers, employment, or national income, and make the link between each example and your overall judgement more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, the body paragraphs present a drawback and benefits, and the conclusion restates your position. Transitions such as “However,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. Some connections are less smooth or precise, though. The first body paragraph begins with a general description of supermarkets before moving to confusion, and the relationship between importing food and “outsourcing food” is unclear. In the conclusion, “Additionally” introduces a related point but the sentence repeats the economic argument rather than extending it. Use topic sentences that directly signal each paragraph’s main claim, and make references and links between examples and claims more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “diversity,” “international products,” “cuisine,” “importing,” and “global economy,” which allows you to discuss choice, culture, and trade. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “trademark dishes” and “overwhelming.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “confussion,” “taste other cultures food,” “tend to explore,” and “rise a country's economy.” “Consumers and buyers” is also repetitive, while “edible products” is less natural than a direct reference to food. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and fluency. Focus on common collocations and check spelling and word forms when revising.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure (“if you go into any hypermarkets…”) and a concession in the conclusion (“although…”). Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “I think this a positive development” is missing a verb, and “the increased amount of choices he have” has problems with number and subject–verb agreement. In “Mahshy… has become really famous… and it made,” the tense shift is awkward, while “benefit a one's taste and makes him” has inconsistent structure and agreement. Articles and possessives also need attention in “other cultures food.” Practise checking each sentence for a complete verb, consistent agreement, and clear noun phrases.
