IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In today's era, people can easily access the food produced in different parts of the world in grocery stores. In my opinion, this is a positive development because people can taste different varieties of food and this can also help to develop a strong bond with other nations.
On the one hand, people can taste different types of food within the place they live. When foods from other nations can easily be available in their own hometown, people do not need to travel outside their place to taste the different varieties of food. Consequently, this can also save the money of the people which they need to spend to travel for different places. For example, Nepalese people can easily have access to the food produced in Thailand in their nearby stores.
On the other hand, trading the food from different parts of the world can also help to create a strong relationship between the nations. When the nations trade the food produced in their own country to another country, people can also have an opportunity to know the culture of the different nations, which makes their relationship stronger. As a result, nations can also trade other items in the future to each other, which would also contribute to the economic growth of the countries. For example, when Indian people try Chinese food, such as noodles, they can learn to use the chopsticks to eat noodles, which is also one aspect of Chinese culture.
In conclusion, I believe that the opportunity people can have to access the food produced from the different parts of the world is a positive development because people can take the taste of different cuisines without visiting outside their place and this can also help to create a healthy relationship between the country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you consider worldwide food availability positive. You address the question with two relevant reasons—access to varied cuisines without travelling and stronger connections between countries—and support them with examples involving Thai food in Nepal and Chinese noodles in India. This gives the response a sound, relevant foundation. However, the first reason is developed mainly as a convenience and cost-saving point, while the claim that food trade creates stronger national relationships is asserted more than demonstrated. The chopsticks example illustrates cultural exposure, but its link to lasting relations or economic growth needs further explanation. To strengthen the response, develop each cause-and-effect chain more fully and make the examples more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and the conclusion restates the position. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the structure easy to follow. You also use linking expressions to show results, including “Consequently” and “As a result.” At times, however, these transitions feel formulaic, and repeated references to “people,” “nations,” and “different parts of the world” make the flow less flexible. Some links between claims could be made more explicit—for instance, explain how learning about food culture leads to stronger relations. Varying transitions and using clearer referencing would make the progression more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You communicate the main ideas with adequate vocabulary, including “varieties,” “trade,” “culture,” “relationship,” and “economic growth.” The meaning is generally clear, but several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, which limits flexibility and naturalness. For example, “take the taste of different cuisines” is not idiomatic; “experience different cuisines” would be more natural. “Travel outside their place” and “nearby stores” could be expressed more precisely as “travel abroad” and “local supermarkets.” The repeated use of “different” and “people” also narrows the range. Aim to use more accurate collocations and vary key nouns, while keeping the language straightforward. These improvements would make your argument sound more fluent and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses beginning with “because,” “when,” and “which.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the overall argument remains easy to understand. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly in article use, prepositions, and sentence construction. For example, “travel for different places” should be “travel to different places,” while “the culture of the different nations” would more naturally be “the cultures of different nations.” In the conclusion, “the opportunity people can have to access” is an awkwardly constructed clause; “people’s ability to access” is clearer. Continue practising accurate noun phrases and preposition patterns, and revise longer sentences to ensure their clauses connect cleanly.
