In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In several countries recently, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced globally. Globalization has opened the doors for international opportunities. Accessibility to exotic fruits and vegetables can have nutritional values. Hence, I believe that this is a positive development.

There are several benefits of having food produced all over the world in a supermarket. First, the increase in competition from global suppliers provides consumers with a variety of options as well as competitive prices. Moreover, migrated citizens from across the world, including students can have access to food from their home country; giving them a taste of home. Furthermore, it gives locals a chance to explore food from across the world; increasing culinary innovation. For example, Alphonso mangoes are grown only in India and are exported world-wide because of the flavour it offers. This allows India to be represented on a global stature, while supporting local farmers and bringing revenue. Finally, having access to different fruits, vegetables, grains and other food products can broaden people's diets, leading to a healthy nation.

However, there are certain drawbacks of importing food produced from all over the world. First, a rise in the imports affects the GDP of an economy. Second, global competition lead to huge losses for the farmers which are hard to recover: This results in an increase in the suicide rates of the farmers. The options available due to imports can affect the preference for local food.

To recapitulate, while I believe that the accessibility to global food can have severe consequences on the local farmers, the advantages overweigh the disadvantages and hence allowing consumers to buy food produced all over the world in a supermarket is a positive development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you consider worldwide food availability a positive development despite risks to local farmers. You address both benefits and drawbacks, with relevant points about consumer choice, migrants, culinary exploration and farmers’ livelihoods. The Alphonso mango example adds useful support. However, some ideas are asserted rather than explained: for instance, the claim that imports affect GDP is not clarified, and the link between competition and farmer suicides needs careful explanation or evidence. The health benefit is also broad rather than demonstrated. This covers the task well overall, but fuller development and more precise support for these points would make the argument more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion that restates your view. Sequencing words such as “First,” “Moreover,” “Furthermore” and “Finally” help readers follow the list of benefits. The progression is generally logical, though the repeated list-style transitions can feel mechanical, and the drawbacks paragraph moves quickly from GDP to farmers’ losses and local preferences without showing how these points connect. Some links are also awkward, as in “This allows India to be represented… while supporting local farmers,” where the relationship between the example and the broader claim could be clearer. Use fewer formulaic transitions and connect each point through explanation or reference.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “global suppliers,” “competitive prices,” “culinary innovation,” “imports” and “local farmers.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the example of Alphonso mangoes gives the discussion some specificity. You also attempt less common expressions, but some are inaccurate or unnatural: “nutritional values” would be better expressed as “nutritional benefits,” and “represented on a global stature” does not convey the intended meaning naturally. “Overweigh” is also the wrong form in the conclusion; use “outweigh.” Greater precision in collocations and word forms, alongside more exact language for economic effects, would make the vocabulary more flexible and convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the relative clause in “mangoes are grown only in India and are exported…” and the concluding contrast beginning “while I believe…”. Meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “global competition lead” needs subject–verb agreement (“leads”), and the phrase “including students can have access” needs clearer sentence structure, such as “including students, can access…”. The semicolon before “This results” is not appropriate in that construction; use a full stop or a comma with a suitable conjunction. The final sentence also has an awkward participle construction after “and hence.” Check agreement, clause boundaries and punctuation, while continuing to use varied sentence forms.
