IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, consumers in many nations can purchase foods that are manufactured globally from their local supermarket. I believe this is a positive development because this change enables the native people to try various kinds of foods of different cultures, and foreigners to get their country's dishes while they are traveling.

Local residents can buy food items of other nations from their local shops without having to visit foreign states. This facility allows the citizens of a particular country to taste the meals of other cultures staying at their homes. People can learn about the cultures and food habits of the residents of different territories around the world by consuming their food items. Availability of food products of other cultures gives the citizens of a country the opportunity to experience the eating habits of different nationalities of the globe. For instance, people of Bangladesh can now buy Italian and Chineese food products from the local supermarket, and enjoy the taste of those foreign meals at their homes.

In addition, availability of foreign food items at the local shops allows the foreigners to get their native meals in abroad. The food habits of people depend significantly on where they are from. When residents of a particular region travel or settle permanently to a distant place, they often struggle to adjust to the local food habits. In such cases, it is highly beneficial for the foreign nationals if they find their native food there. For example, Bangladeshi international students living in Western countries regulary purchase food products from Bengali shops since they prefer to eat desi food in their everyday lives.

In conclusion, when consumers can purchase the food items of all cultures and states of othe world from their local shops, they get the chance to explore the food habits of other nations and know about their lifestyle. Moreover, foreigners can easily prepare their meals at home due to the availability of their native food products in foreign states. Therefore, I think this is a positive change for all individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you consider global food availability positive, and both body paragraphs give relevant reasons. The examples about Bangladeshis buying Italian and Chinese products and students abroad finding Bengali food help make the points concrete. This meets the task well, but the two benefits are not developed equally: the first paragraph repeats the idea of experiencing other cultures through food several times, while the second explains the practical benefit to people living abroad more fully. The claim that food lets people learn about wider cultures could also be explained or supported more specifically. To strengthen the response, develop each reason with a distinct consequence and make the supporting examples show that consequence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear introduction, two focused body paragraphs and a conclusion, with a logical progression from cultural exploration to the needs of people living abroad. Linking phrases such as “In addition,” “For instance” and “In conclusion” make the structure easy to follow. The main limitation is some repetition within the first body paragraph: the sentences about tasting other cultures’ meals and experiencing different nationalities’ eating habits largely restate the same point. The conclusion also repeats both body-paragraph ideas rather than drawing them together in a more concise final judgement. Use referencing and transitions to connect related points without restating them, and ensure each sentence adds a new step to the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including phrases such as “food habits,” “native meals,” “foreign nationals” and “availability of food products.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the reader can follow your meaning. However, some expressions are repetitive or imprecise, particularly repeated uses of “food items,” “local shops” and “food habits.” There are also spelling errors in “Chineese” and “regulary,” and phrases such as “in abroad” and “distant place” are not natural in this context. Aim for more precise collocations and vary your wording while keeping it natural; careful proofreading would also remove avoidable spelling slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional and subordinate clauses such as “When residents of a particular region travel or settle permanently…” and “if they find their native food there.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the paragraph structure supports readability. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “allows the foreigners to get their native meals in abroad,” the article and preposition pattern are faulty; “allows foreigners to find their native meals abroad” would be more accurate. The phrase “the citizens of a country the opportunity” also needs a clearer grammatical construction, such as “gives citizens the opportunity.” Continue practising article use and sentence patterns, and check that longer sentences remain controlled.
