IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

I support the idea of the supermarkets all over the world that consumers can go and buy food of all the other countries. For example dates from Saudi Arabia, apples from China, cheese from France, fruits from Australlia etc. People dont really have to travel to get international foods from all over the world and they can get it easily from the supermarkets.

In appears a positive development to me because consumers can enjoy all the international food items without travelling far away or abroad, secondly the international trade of the country increases. Economy of the country can raise and the food items can be available at cheap rates and not so expensive. People have more food choices, and also the people can buy the seasonal fruits throught the year.

Meanwhile i believe that the negative development could be that the imported food items can be expensive as compared to the local food prices. Transportaion of the food can also cause pollution. Local farmers may suffer financially. Fresh local products may lose popularity. The imported food if not bought by the consumers can lead to expiry of the food items and can be harmful for the consumers.

It is recommended that consumers should buy the international food items from the supermarkets because it is more beneficial for the countries as their international trade could increase and lead to a good economy.

Hence in my opinion, i think availability of the food products from all over the country has a positive impact on the consumers and development of the country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you consider worldwide supermarket food a positive development, and you give relevant reasons, including greater choice, year-round access to seasonal produce and increased trade. You also acknowledge drawbacks such as transport pollution and pressure on local farmers, so the response addresses both sides of the question. However, the positive case is more fully stated than explained: for example, the claim that trade can improve the economy is repeated in the conclusion but not supported with a specific explanation or example. Some points, such as food becoming cheaper and unsold imports expiring, are introduced briefly without showing when or why this happens. Develop fewer ideas with clearer reasoning and examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph presenting benefits, a paragraph on drawbacks, and a conclusion that restates your view. This makes the main direction easy to follow. Some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear, however. The second paragraph joins several benefits with “secondly” and “and also,” while the final paragraph begins “It is recommended,” which sounds like a general recommendation rather than a direct continuation of your personal argument. The conclusion also repeats the economic point instead of drawing the discussion together. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each supporting explanation to its main point; vary linking expressions and make references such as “it” or “the food” more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “international trade,” “seasonal fruits,” “local farmers,” and “pollution.” These terms help you discuss both benefits and costs. However, some wording is imprecise or repetitive, particularly repeated uses of “food items” and “all over the world.” There are also spelling and word-choice problems, such as “Australlia,” “Transportaion,” and “cheap rates,” which reduce accuracy and naturalness. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully. For instance, distinguish imported products from locally produced food, and use a more natural phrase when describing prices or the effect on the national economy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some sentence forms are controlled, such as “Local farmers may suffer financially,” while other sentences show errors in agreement, articles, verb forms and punctuation. For example, “the international trade of the country increases” and “Economy of the country can raise” are not well-formed, and “the imported food items can be expensive as compared to the local food prices” has an unclear comparison. Capitalisation and apostrophes are also inconsistent in “Meanwhile i believe” and “People dont.” Practise building accurate sentences around one main idea, then add subordinate clauses only when you can control their grammar and punctuation.
