IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In numerous nations, food products from different countries are now widely available in the supershops because of globalisation. I firmly believe that it is a negative development because it promotes capitalism and it results in decrease of land fertility of several regions.

Supermarkets tend to offer a large number of options for consumers. Although it seems convenient for most of the people, the underlying effect of this is connected to capitalism. Supershops import goods from countries where the price of the products are reasonable, although they sell these products in a much higher rate. The farmers who produce the foods get a minimal wage, however the shops make profit in a larger scale. For instance, food products and spices from South Asia are sold in United States at a high price, but the producers often get the wage that is not enough for their survival. Sometimes several food ingredients are produced for the global market only so that local people do not even get the chance to enjoy the products that are grown in their homeland.

Also, supermarkets often order a huge quantity of food products. So, the cultivable land are being used more than usual which directly affects the soil quality. Sometimes overusing a land might result in infertility. If the land becomes infertile, it becomes unusable for food production for a span of time. For instance, India exports a lot of spice to international markets but it negatively affects the soil when the land is used simultaneously, without any break.

In conclusion, globalisation makes it easier for people to choose different products from different countries in a single shop, but it mostly helps to foster the capitalism where enterprises are getting bigger and bigger, and the living condition does not change for the producers. I think, region-based food should be contained in a supermarket, it will help the local producers as well as land fertility would not decrease as the soil is not oversued.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you regard worldwide supermarket food as negative because of its effects on producers and soil. Both reasons are relevant and are supported with examples, including South Asian spices sold in the United States and India’s spice exports. The conclusion also returns to your view and proposes a preference for regional food. This meets the task well, although the argument sometimes makes broad claims without enough explanation. For example, the link between supermarkets’ large orders and soil infertility is asserted, but the role of farming practices or export demand could be clarified. The claim that local people lose access to products also needs a more specific explanation. Develop these points with clearer cause-and-effect reasoning and more precise support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion summarises your position. The progression from producers’ earnings to soil quality is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Also,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. The opening of the second body paragraph moves quickly from supermarkets ordering large quantities to land being used more, without fully explaining the link. The conclusion also combines several ideas in a long sentence, making the final recommendation harder to follow. Use linking phrases to show cause and effect more explicitly, and keep each concluding point distinct.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “globalisation,” “cultivable land,” “soil quality,” “infertility,” and “producers.” These choices make the main argument clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “supershops,” “sell these products in a much higher rate,” “make profit in a larger scale,” and “the living condition does not change.” “Oversued” is also misspelled, and “contained in a supermarket” does not express your intended recommendation naturally. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and fluency. Choose standard terms such as “supermarkets,” check common word partnerships, and proofread spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including concessive clauses beginning with “Although” and conditional structures such as “If the land becomes infertile.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the price of the products are” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “the cultivable land are being used” also mismatches subject and verb. Articles and number are sometimes inaccurate in phrases such as “a huge quantity of food products” and “overusing a land.” The final sentence, “I think, region-based food should be contained in a supermarket,” has awkward punctuation and sentence construction. Review agreement, articles, and singular/plural forms, and revise longer sentences so their clauses are clearly connected.
