IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world.

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, it has become increasingly common for the consumers to buy food produced all over the world in the supermarkets. Although this trend has some disadvantages, I strongly believe that it is a positive development because of its numerous benefits.

On one hand, one of main advantages of this development is time-saving. This is mainly because if a consumer wants to buy different types of food products he can just go the supermarket and can buy whatever he wants rather than visiting one shop for one product. As a result the consumer can save his time in visiting different stores. For example, if any consumer wants to buy three different types of food items he has to visit three different shops earlier, but now he can just go to the supermarket and buy all the three food items at once.

Another significant benefit is that the customers can experience wide-range of food items. In other words earlier there were only local food items, but now all food products all over the world available in the supermarket. This can lead to help consumers to experience different types of food products not just local products. For instance, people living in India can easily purchase Italian pasta, Swiss chocolate and Japanese noodles from local supermarkets.

In conclusion, although importing food from other countries may create environmental concerns and affect local farmers, I believe that this is a positive development overall. This is because it saves consumers time and make them experience greater food choices.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you consider worldwide food availability positive, despite acknowledging disadvantages. You address the question with two relevant benefits—saving time and offering consumers more choice—and support the second with examples of Italian pasta, Swiss chocolate and Japanese noodles in India. This meets the task well, and the conclusion restates your view. However, the first benefit is explained mainly through repeated versions of the same supermarket-versus-several-shops example, so it is less fully developed. The environmental and local-farmer concerns appear only in the conclusion and are not explained. To strengthen the response further, develop the benefits with more specific consequences and briefly explain or connect the disadvantages you mention.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate benefits, and a conclusion summarises your position. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “On one hand,” “Another significant benefit,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. The examples are placed alongside the points they support. Some linking is less natural or repetitive, however: “This is mainly because” and “As a result” lead into closely related explanations, while “In other words” introduces a restatement rather than a distinct clarification. The contrast between benefits and disadvantages is also not developed beyond the conclusion. Use transitions selectively and make each sentence add a new step to the reasoning.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use adequate vocabulary to communicate the topic, including “environmental concerns,” “local farmers,” “consumers,” and “food products.” The examples of foods from different countries also make the discussion concrete. There are attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “wide-range of food items,” but some choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “experience wide-range” and “all food products all over the world available” do not express the intended meaning naturally. Repetition of “food items,” “food products,” and “buy” also limits flexibility. Aim for more precise collocations and vary repeated terms; for example, describe consumers as having access to a broader selection and say that imported products are available in supermarkets.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a concession in the opening (“Although this trend has some disadvantages”) and conditional clauses such as “if a consumer wants to buy…”. Meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. Examples include “one of main advantages” (missing article), “he can just go the supermarket” (missing preposition), and “all food products all over the world available” (missing verb). In the conclusion, “it saves consumers time and make them experience” also has a subject–verb agreement error. Some sentences repeat “can” or combine clauses awkwardly. Review articles, verb forms and agreement, and edit each sentence to ensure it has a complete, correctly linked structure.
