Student answer (Band 7.0)

There are increasing options on the number of global products readily available in supermarkets today. In this essay, I will discuss why this is a positive improvement on consumerism.

In earlier centuries, exchanging of goods among countries known as "barter" was one way of providing the needs of a society. Trading commodities would provide mutual interests among countries by supplying resources that are abundant and importing goods that they lack.

In an economic standpoint, if supplies are high and demand is low, prices will go down. In this case where there are more choices for people, a healthy competition between locally-produced and imported products will result in fairer price tags. For instance, if a town only sells products that are made in their locality, there will be no competitors and hence the producers will not be forced to make their prices reasonable.

Additionally, widened selections of products will make people more open to try new things and explore new dishes from different parts of the world. For those who are financially or physically constrained to travel, the importation of different foods and products from across the globe will enable them to try and experience new food and products. S&R Membership Shopping and Shopwise are two major supermarkets in the Philippines that offer a wide range of products sourced all over the world. Interestingly, these goods are sorted according to which country they are from. Most shoppers, including myself, are very keen to try new things not just for household use but also for personal use, like hair conditioners, mousse and other cosmetic products that are not too common.

In conclusion, having a wide array of commodities from all over the world not only promotes healthy trade amoung countries, but also stabilizes the economy and gives opportunity for people to choose freely and interestingly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear: you regard the global availability of food and other products as positive, and you address the question directly. The response develops two relevant reasons—greater price competition and access to unfamiliar products—and supports them with a local-market example and your experience as a shopper. This gives the argument a clear basis. To make the discussion more fully developed, explain the economic link more carefully: the claim that high supply and low demand lower prices does not by itself show how imported goods affect local prices. The historical point about barter is relevant background, but it takes space without directly advancing your evaluation. A brief acknowledgement of a possible drawback, such as pressure on local producers, would also make the reasoning more balanced.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the ideas generally progress from economic benefits to consumer choice. Linking expressions such as “Additionally” and “In conclusion” help signal this progression. However, some connections are more mechanical or unclear than fully smooth. The opening historical paragraph is not clearly tied to the later argument, and “In this case” does not precisely connect the supply-and-demand statement to the effect of imported products. The final sentence also combines trade, economic stability and consumer choice without showing how each follows from the discussion. Strengthen cohesion by making each paragraph’s central point explicit and using clearer references between claims and examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for the topic, including “commodities,” “mutual interests,” “healthy competition,” “importation” and “a wide range of products.” These choices help communicate the economic and consumer aspects of the argument. There are also some imprecise or unnatural collocations that keep the vocabulary from being consistently flexible: “positive improvement on consumerism” is not a natural way to describe the development, and “fairer price tags” is less precise than language about prices or affordability. “Widened selections” and “choose freely and interestingly” are also awkward formulations. Aim for more idiomatic combinations and precise terms, and check spelling: “amoung” should be “among.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You demonstrate a useful mix of sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if supplies are high and demand is low” and a complex sentence beginning “For those who are financially or physically constrained to travel.” Many sentences are clear and grammatically controlled, which supports the argument. A few errors or awkward constructions remain. “In an economic standpoint” should use the appropriate preposition, while “exchanging of goods” would be more naturally formed without the unnecessary “of.” In “a wide array of commodities … not only promotes … but also stabilizes … and gives opportunity,” the final phrase needs an article or a plural form. Review parallel structures and articles, especially in longer sentences, to make the grammar more consistently accurate.
