Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to inform you that I want to cut off my working hours so that I can study in the meantime. I am Komal, working as a customer assistant in your company.
I aim to work around 24-28 hours a week. It will usually be in the mornings from 5 am to 2 pm. Because of that, I will have spare time to study.
My part-time studies will not only help me to improve my skills in assisting the customers but also help your company manage various problems; for example, if you are on leave and nobody knows how to do your responsibilities, I will make sure to take care of all those things and note them down for you to check when u come back to work.
I will be very thankful to you if you approve my request.
Hoping to hear a positive response from you.
Yours faithfully,
Komal Babbar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the reason for the request (to study), specify the desired hours (24-28 hours, 5 am to 2 pm), and explain the benefit to the employer (assisting with management tasks). The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a supervisor. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific nature of the studies and how they directly translate into value for the company, as the current explanation regarding 'managing problems' is a bit vague. Overall, the task is fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Because of that' and 'not only... but also', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The overall progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the structure supports the purpose of the communication effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'inform you', 'approve my request', and 'positive response' are appropriate for a formal business context. However, there are some instances where the word choice could be more precise; for example, 'cut off' is a phrasal verb that sounds slightly informal or aggressive in this context. Using 'reduce' or 'adjust' would be more professional. You generally communicate your meaning clearly, but there is limited use of less common or sophisticated vocabulary to elevate the tone of the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most sentences are clear, there are some minor grammatical issues, such as the informal use of 'u' instead of 'you' and the slightly awkward phrasing 'in the meantime' in the opening. Punctuation is generally accurate, though the sentence structure in the third paragraph is quite long and could be broken up for better readability. The errors present do not impede communication, and you show a reasonable level of control over basic sentence construction.
