Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear sir or Madam,

My name is Deepshikha, working in your company as an Assistant accountant. I am writing this letter to request you to reduce my working hours as I am studying part time.

Actually, I am pursuing my Business of commerce part time and now i have an exams next month so I need time to prepare for it. As I am working 10 hours a day so I am unable to concentrate on my education.

Specifically , i would appreciate having Fridays off, while continuing to work my regular hours from monday to Thursday . This arrangement alllow me to complete the coursework.

I am confident that this course will benefit the company. It will enhance my knowlegde of project, planning and time management. I would also like to share techniques with the company, which could improve our team’s overall performance.

I hope you will consider my request. Thank you for your time and understanding.

Yours sincerely,

Deepshikha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (part-time studies), specify the desired schedule (Fridays off), and explain the benefits to the employer (project planning and time management skills). The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on how the specific skills gained from your course would be applied to your current daily tasks at the company, providing more depth to the final bullet point.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the request, the schedule details, and the benefits. You use some cohesive devices like 'Specifically' and 'I am confident that', which help the flow. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. Using a wider variety of linking words would improve the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'pursuing', 'concentrate', and 'arrangement'. There are some minor errors, such as 'Business of commerce' (likely meaning 'Bachelor of Commerce') and 'knowlegde' (spelling error). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated or precise collocations that would characterize a higher band score. Focusing on accurate terminology related to your field of work would strengthen this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'i have an exams' (article/plurality error), 'alllow me' (spelling/tense error), and 'monday to Thursday' (capitalization). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, ensure consistent subject-verb agreement and pay closer attention to small details like articles and capitalization. Increasing the use of error-free complex sentences would help you move into the higher band range.
