Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear MR.Turnbull,
I am writing this letter today as a request to decrease my working hours per week. I have always respected your co-operation and helping nature towards all the employees. I would like to draw this under your attention that i am starting my part time studies from next week. The studies i choose are parallel to our company's motive.
There will not be any big of a change into my schedule. My last working hours were Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm. However, my new schedule will be as follow:
. My Monday and Tuesday schedule will be same as before.
. I would like to finish my work sooner and leave 3 hours early on Wednesday to Friday.
As i mentioned above that my studies fall under the same field our company motives. I guarantee that my part time studies will result in favor to my company growth. I know our company is in need of a new team leader. Apparently after passing my exam I will fit in the supervisor's shoes. I really hope that you will take my letter to consideration and will approve my request.
Thankyou kindly sir.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points: the reason for the request, the specific hours desired, and the benefit to the employer. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal request. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of how the studies benefit the company is a bit vague, relying on general statements like 'fit in the supervisor's shoes' rather than specific skills gained. While the task is fully addressed, the depth of the arguments could be improved to reach a higher band. The structure is clear, and the purpose of the letter is immediately evident to the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the request to the schedule details and finally the benefits. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However' and 'As I mentioned above', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The use of bullet points for the schedule is an effective way to present information clearly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion. Overall, the flow of the letter is easy to follow, and the relationship between ideas is consistently clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their request clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'big of a change' and 'helping nature'. The student attempts to use more formal language, such as 'parallel to our company's motive' and 'in favor to my company growth', but these collocations are slightly inaccurate. While the range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. The errors in word choice do not impede communication, but they do highlight a need for more natural English collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'draw this under your attention' (should be 'bring this to your attention'), 'The studies i choose' (tense error), and 'take my letter to consideration' (preposition error). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization issues, such as 'MR.Turnbull' and the inconsistent use of 'i' instead of 'I'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. The student demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but control over these is inconsistent.
