Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Boss,
I am writing to request reduction in working hours in order to pursue part-time Artificial Intelligence course in Niagara falls University.
As the project requirements are mainly on AI dependant, I felt like its the best time to study the course, so that it helps in delivering business requirements faster. Course timings are during the noon, So I would be able to support only during the morning hours.
I can able to support from morning 6 to 12 PM in the morning. However, I have asked my teammate to support during my absence and transferred all the required transition.
Thanks for your time and understanding in this matter.
Thanks,
Nikhitha.
AI examiner evaluation
| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|
| Task Achievement / Task Response | 5.5 |
| Coherence and Cohesion | 6.5 |
| Lexical Resource | 6.0 |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | 6.0 |
| Overall | 6.0 |
Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points: the reason for the request, the proposed hours, and the benefits to the employer. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum, which limits the development of ideas. The explanation of how the studies benefit the employer is quite brief and lacks detail. To improve, you should expand on how the AI knowledge will specifically improve your current projects or team efficiency. Because the length requirement was not met, the task is only partially addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into short paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the request. However, the use of cohesive devices is very limited. The transition between the reason for the study and the proposed hours is somewhat abrupt. While the overall message is clear, the lack of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in addition') makes the writing feel a bit mechanical. Improving the flow between sentences would help achieve a higher score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. Phrases like 'I felt like its the best time' are informal and repetitive. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'AI dependant' instead of 'AI-dependent' and 'transferred all the required transition' which is unclear. To reach a higher band, you should use more professional, business-appropriate collocations and avoid informal phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
There are several grammatical errors that affect the professional tone. For example, 'I can able to' is a redundant construction (should be 'I am able to'). There are also missing articles ('the' Niagara Falls University) and punctuation issues, such as the comma splice in 'Course timings are during the noon, So I would...'. The range of structures is limited to simple sentences. Incorporating more complex sentence structures and proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement would improve your score.
