Student answer (Band 7.0)

Mr. Gill

I hope you are well. I am writing this letter to cut my working hours, which I will use to get my R313 refrigeration license.

I have been working in your company for the last two years. Now, I am planning to grow in this field, and upgrade my license from D grade to A, for which I enrolled in an insititue for the evening classes, and I need an early day-off to focus on my studies.

Usually, I came 7 A.M at warehouse, and finished my job late evening around 5 P.M. It would be greatful if you could end my current shift at 3 P.M without giving me any breaks, As my classes starts at 4. Although it is quite hard for me to manage these things, I have one hour to travel to the institute, and for lunch.

This professional growth not only increase your productivity to assign me air conditioner installation jobs, but also helps me to raise my current wage rate. After getting this license, I am legally allowed to do work on commercial and residential cooling machines.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Gurdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the reason for the request, specifying the desired hours, and describing the benefits to the employer. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a supervisor. However, the development of ideas is slightly uneven. While the reason for the request is clear, the explanation of how the employer benefits could be more professional; specifically, the mention of raising your wage rate is not a benefit to the employer, but rather a personal gain. To improve, ensure all points focus on the employer's perspective to make a more persuasive case.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Although' and 'not only... but also', to link ideas. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between your current schedule and the proposed change could be more fluid. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using industry-specific terms like 'refrigeration license' and 'commercial and residential cooling machines'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'greatful' (should be 'grateful') and 'insititue' (spelling error). Additionally, 'cut my working hours' is slightly informal; 'reduce' is more appropriate. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band score. Focusing on more formal collocations will help improve this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I came 7 A.M at warehouse' (should be 'I arrive at the warehouse at 7 A.M.') and 'my classes starts' (subject-verb agreement error). The phrase 'without giving me any breaks' is also slightly awkward in this context. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tenses and subject-verb agreement, and try to incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentences.
