Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to request you to reduce my working hours, as I am joining the college for part- time studies from next month and this course will lasts about six months. As you know I have been working with this company from last 3 years as a CNC Machinist and I would like to learn in depth about programming, set-ups and mechanism of these machines.
To begin with, I would like to switch my shift from morning to afternoon as my college hours will be from 9a:m to 2p:m (Monday to Friday). Additionally, I would really appreciate if you could reduce my 8 hours shift to 6 hours as I might need time to complete my assignments and presentations during my studies.
Therefore, I will be certified technician of CNC machines at the end of this diploma and I will be rewarded with a license which will be beneficial for our company as I will be able to setup and resolve any technical and mechanical problems with machines. As, other company's charge us significant fees per visit to fix machines.
I hope you would consider my request and I look forward to your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Sukhman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your reason for the request (part-time studies), specified the desired hours (afternoon shift, 6 hours), and articulated the benefits to your employer (technical certification and cost savings). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a supervisor. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing a clear justification for your request. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your studies and the specific company benefits is even more explicitly linked to the company's current operational needs.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal conclusion. You have used cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', and 'Therefore' to guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the request. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. To improve, ensure that the transition between the request for hours and the explanation of benefits is slightly more seamless, as the current shift in focus is a little abrupt.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, including terms like 'certified technician', 'diploma', and 'mechanical problems'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'joining the college' (should be 'enrolling in a college') and 'other company's charge' (should be 'other companies charge'). While these do not impede communication, they prevent the use of vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'precise' at a higher level. Focusing on more natural collocations will help improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'this course will lasts' (should be 'will last'), 'working with this company from last 3 years' (should be 'for the last 3 years'), and 'I will be certified technician' (should be 'I will be a certified technician'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation issues, such as '9a:m' and '2p:m'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your intent. Increasing your control over articles and verb tenses will significantly improve your accuracy.
