Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Chahal,
I want approval from you to reduce my working hours because I want to focus on study. As I am taking part- time study.
I am studying online from the Singh teaching center Patiala. as i am taking classes of truck dispatching . Recently i joined the classes but unfortunately I am not giving my best in studies. Moreover, due to over workload i missed my last class and i felt bad for that.
I prefer to do night shifts on weekdays because I am taking classes from India and its hard for me to manage both things together. However, due to time difference day-time of Canada suits me for work on weekdays. on weekends they provide extra classes in evening and in morning.
As I recently joined post of dispatcher in your company and I feel that it's tricky job and I need some classes to become a good truck dispatcher and I give good output to company if I will complete 3 months session.
your trustworthy,
Yuvreet Rishi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: the reason for the request, the preferred hours, and the benefits to the employer. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. The explanation of the benefits to the employer is a bit vague, focusing more on the student's personal need for classes rather than explicitly detailing how the company will gain from their improved skills. To reach a higher band, the connection between the training and the company's productivity should be more clearly articulated. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal request to a manager, though it could be more professional.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate. For example, the transition 'As I am taking part-time study' at the end of the first paragraph is a sentence fragment, and the use of 'Moreover' and 'However' is sometimes forced. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'on weekends they provide extra classes', where 'they' lacks a clear antecedent. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words would enhance the flow of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are some awkward collocations, such as 'give good output to company' and 'joined post of dispatcher'. The student relies on basic vocabulary and occasionally struggles with word choice, such as using 'tricky job' instead of a more professional term like 'demanding' or 'complex'. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there are some errors in word formation and usage that prevent a higher score. Expanding the range of professional terminology would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include missing articles ('at the Singh teaching center'), incorrect verb tenses ('I am not giving my best'), and punctuation errors (e.g., 'your trustworthy' instead of 'Yours sincerely'). There are also several sentence fragments, such as 'As I am taking part-time study.' While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement, proper article usage, and ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and main verb.
