Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sydney,
I am writing to request you to reduce my working hours as I am planning to study part time.
Recently, one of my friend shared an information about the short course for the duration of six months which I can do while working. It is a Health Care Assistant course. I need to attend classes from 4 pm till 10 pm. Usually my working hours are from 9 am till 5 pm but I want to request you to reduce one hour for all weekdays which would be from 9 till 4 pm.
This course will enhance my CPR skills, handling and taking extra care of disabled person which would be much beneficial for our home care service. Although I have these skills but i do not have certificate which is essential to be a HCA.
It would be greatly appreciated if you could look into this matter and reduce my working hours.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Nya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (the Health Care Assistant course), specify the desired working hours (9 am to 4 pm), and articulate the professional benefits to your employer. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a supervisor. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific ways the course content will improve your daily performance, perhaps by mentioning a specific task or responsibility you will be better equipped to handle. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Although' and 'This course will' to link ideas. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in addition to this') to create a smoother flow between sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the message.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'enhance my CPR skills' and 'look into this matter' are well-chosen and appropriate for a professional context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'one of my friend' (should be 'friends') and 'shared an information' (information is uncountable). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure you are using countable and uncountable nouns correctly. Expanding your vocabulary to include more professional terminology related to your field would also help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'i do not have certificate' (missing an article: 'a certificate') and 'disabled person' (should be plural: 'disabled people'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, aim for greater accuracy in article usage and subject-verb agreement. Additionally, try to incorporate more complex sentence structures, such as conditional sentences (e.g., 'If my request were granted, I would be able to...'), to demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
