Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear John,
I am writing this letter to request you to reduce my working hours to become eligible for studying part time.
I want to you to please reduce my working hours because I am planning to move ahead in my career if I get enough time to study part time it would definitely help me to get increment in my income and life growth.
Some of the week days I will be available for entire time but from Wednesday to Saturday I will prefer working from 2 pm to 7 pm because of my part time study. It will work best for me and I will not miss my classes.
The subjects which I am going to study about will also help your company because I will be studying about operating new machine and learning how to fix any kind of repair if that occurs to those machine in future.
I will glad to hear good from you.
Thank you
Rohan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained your motivation for reducing hours, specified your preferred schedule, and described the benefits to your employer. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of how your studies benefit the company is a bit vague; providing more specific details about the machine training would have strengthened your argument. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'because' and 'however' (implied), but the flow between sentences could be improved with a wider variety of linking words. Paragraphing is present, but the transitions between ideas feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to use more sophisticated cohesive devices to connect your ideas more fluidly, such as 'consequently,' 'furthermore,' or 'in addition to this.'
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your request clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'eligible,' 'part-time,' and 'career.' However, there are some awkward phrasings, such as 'get increment in my income' and 'entire time,' which sound unnatural. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations. For example, instead of 'get increment,' use 'receive a salary increase.' Expanding your range of vocabulary to include more professional and academic terms would help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I want to you to please reduce' (extra 'to'), 'entire time' (missing article/preposition), and 'I will glad to hear' (missing 'be'). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are slightly run-on. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that auxiliary verbs are used correctly. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures will help you move into the higher bands.
