Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs. Bhavsar,
I hope you are in the pink of your health. I am writing this letter to request you about adjusting working schedule for me. As I am starting a new part time accounting course to enhance my understanding in accounting.
Also, I would like to work between 8 AM to 2 PM because my school time will be 4 PM to 7 PM on weekdays. I hope you can approve these changes to my work schedule because, I am starting this course to gain knowledge and practical experience for an accounting role which our company seeks from a senior employee. As it's been three years working as an admin administrative here for me, I thought this will be a great step to get promoted as an accountant. Also, the organization doesn't need to look for a new employee as I had a word with Human Resource department and they told me this course will help both of us for the hiring process.
I hope to hear back a positive response soon.
Thank You!

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (accounting course), specify the desired hours (8 AM to 2 PM), and describe the benefits to the employer (gaining skills for a potential promotion to accountant). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the promotion aspect. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is distinct and fully expanded without restating the same information. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical structure, moving from the purpose of the letter to the specific request and finally the benefits. Paragraphing is present, though the body of the letter could be better divided into distinct paragraphs for each bullet point to improve readability. You use some cohesive devices like 'Also' and 'As', but these are somewhat repetitive. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words such as 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in addition to this' to create a smoother flow between your ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'enhance my understanding' and 'practical experience'. The use of the idiom 'in the pink of your health' is a bit unusual in a formal business context; a standard 'I hope this letter finds you well' would be more appropriate. There are some minor word choice issues, such as 'request you about adjusting' (should be 'request an adjustment to') and 'admin administrative'. While these errors do not impede communication, they show a need for more precise control over professional terminology.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'As I am starting a new part time accounting course to enhance my understanding in accounting' is a sentence fragment. Additionally, there are issues with article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'hear back a positive response' instead of 'hear back with a positive response'. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these minor errors prevents a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring every sentence has a clear main clause.
