Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to request less hours in my work schedule.
I am planning to recommence my educational journey moving forward. I will be joining school to complete my under-graduate diploma in computing which consists of part-time inperson sessions. Beside classes, I will also have group projects and field trips throughout the school year which will help me to excel my skills.
As my availability changes, I will be available to work morning hours on weekdays and I will be able to cover evening shifts on weekends. Moreover, I would love to work on holidays except Christmas and the New Year's Eve due to my prior obligations for my family.
As my studies continue, I will be able to implement my computing skills at the workplace as well which will be beneficial for the company's revenue. I will be able to solve techinical issues at the workplace which will help in better time managemnet.
I will be looking forward to my updated schedule and I really appreciate your help.
Regards,
Manjot Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (pursuing a diploma in computing), specify the desired working hours (weekday mornings and weekend evenings), and outline the benefits to your employer (implementing new skills and improving time management). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a supervisor. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail regarding the exact number of hours you wish to work to ensure the request is as clear as possible for your manager.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the request to the schedule and finally the benefits. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'As my studies continue', and 'Beside classes' to link your ideas. However, the use of these devices is somewhat basic. To improve, you could vary your transitions further and ensure that the connection between sentences is more fluid, as some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the letter is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'recommence', 'educational journey', and 'prior obligations'. There are a few minor errors, such as 'less hours' (should be 'fewer hours') and 'techinical' (spelling error). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication or precision of higher bands. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure spelling is accurate. The vocabulary used is functional and appropriate for a professional context, but expanding your range of topic-specific terminology would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I will be joining school to complete my under-graduate diploma... which consists of...'. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are a few minor errors, such as 'less hours' instead of 'fewer hours' and the slightly awkward phrasing 'help me to excel my skills' (which should be 'enhance' or 'develop'). Punctuation is generally correct, though 'inperson' should be hyphenated as 'in-person'. The errors present do not impede communication, and you show a good command of basic and some complex structures.
