Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. John,
Good day sir, I hope you are doing well? My aim in writing this letter is because I have been admission to study part time in Delta State Medical Centre which is well known for their Wound Certification program and i would like to request a reduction in my shift hours here in the hospital.
I had being working to get my wound care certification for quite a while since joining this ward but had to lay back because i wasn't financially stable as at that time .However since working here, I have being working the twelve hour shift and other overtime hours and now I'm in a good place to start my program. Although majority of my classes are taken online, most of them starts in the afternoon and this will clash with my working hours.
I would like to work the morning shift which is just eight hours long. My classes would start at three o'clock in the afternoon after my morning shift at work which will allow me time to fully participate in my school activities online.
This program will benefit this department because since we are always having large number of people coming in with infected wounds and few trained hands to handle the care , while schooling, I would have first hand knowledge on recent research and evidenced based approach to tackle issues relating to wound care.
Moreover having a extra hand to train other staff will come in handy in the future for training of staff.
I hope to hear and discuss with you regarding this sometime when you are free,
Yours sincerely

|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (the wound certification program), specify the desired shift (morning shift), and articulate the benefits to the employer (evidence-based practice and staff training). The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a supervisor. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing a clear justification for your request. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening is more professional; 'Good day sir' is slightly informal for a formal business letter. Overall, the task is fully accomplished.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Although', and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor punctuation errors and some awkward phrasing, such as 'My aim in writing this letter is because...'. The paragraphing is clear and helps the reader follow your argument. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother to enhance the overall readability.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using topic-specific terms like 'wound certification', 'evidence-based approach', and 'shift hours'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'I have been admission' (should be 'I have been admitted') and 'lay back' (should be 'put it on hold'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over verb forms and idiomatic expressions. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated professional terminology would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'I had being working' (should be 'I have been working') and 'most of them starts' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of commas and the use of spaces before punctuation marks. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of your writing. Focusing on verb tenses and subject-verb agreement will significantly improve your score.
