Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir/madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to discuss changes in my work schedule for the upcoming month.
I recently enrolled in Computer programming course as a part time student at St Clair College. I wanted to learn new languages, techniques and coding to upskill my current knowledge of programming languages. In addition this course will be beneficial for our upcoming iOS Application Project as this course offers best practices with Swift and SwiftUI.
Starting next month my studies will begin. So I wanted to inform you and discuss if it is possible to reduce my shifts. I have received my timetable for the lectures and its from Monday to Wednesday from 8 o'clock until 12 noon. I will be available to work after Wednesday to weekend. Meanwhile I hope you could cooperate for 6 months and reduce my working hours.
I looking forward for your decision.
Thank you,
Fiona Shah

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the reason for the request, specifying the desired hours, and describing the benefits to the employer. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development of the 'benefit' section could be slightly more detailed to fully demonstrate the value to the company. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader is left with no ambiguity regarding your request.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the purpose, the details of the request, and the benefits. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Starting next month', and 'Meanwhile' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to create a more natural, sophisticated progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, including terms like 'upskill', 'beneficial', and 'cooperate'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'I looking forward for your decision' (should be 'I am looking forward to your decision'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise collocations or professional terminology would elevate the response. The spelling is generally accurate, and the language used is appropriate for a workplace context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I recently enrolled in Computer programming course' (missing an article 'a') and 'its from Monday to Wednesday' (should be 'it is' or 'they are'). Additionally, 'I will be available to work after Wednesday to weekend' is slightly awkward; a more natural phrasing would be 'from Wednesday afternoon through the weekend'. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication.
