Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Sharma,
I am writing to inform you that I want to reduce my working hours.
I am planning to pursue further study in accounting field. For this, I will need some time to do study for exam and assignments. That is why, I want to decrease my hours of work.
As I already registered for classes, I can only work from 1 pm to 6 pm on weekdays. It was very difficult to choose classes and register for them in evening. Moreover, I talked with advisor about it to get classes after work, in the evenings. However, It was not possible. Therefore, I tried to take classes daily till 12pm. So that, I can start work from 1pm daily on weekdays.
As I am doing bookkeeping job at your company, if I start taking knowledge of accounting. It will not only benefit to me but also your company. Furthermore, I can work as an accountant at my workplace. So, you will not have need to hire accountant for small works.
I hope you will consider to give me less working hours.
Your sincerely,
Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the reason for the request (pursuing accounting studies), specified the desired working hours (1 pm to 6 pm), and described the potential benefits to your employer (gaining an in-house accountant). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To improve, you could expand slightly on the specific skills you will gain during your studies to make the benefit to your employer even more persuasive. Overall, the response is well-structured and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'Furthermore' to connect your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more refined. For instance, the second paragraph is quite long and covers multiple points; splitting it could improve readability. Additionally, ensure that referencing (e.g., 'it') is always clear to the reader. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'pursue', 'bookkeeping', and 'register'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'taking knowledge of accounting' (should be 'gaining knowledge' or 'studying accounting') and 'not have need to hire' (should be 'no need to hire'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Using more precise professional terminology would enhance the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'do study for exam' (should be 'study for exams'), 'talked with advisor' (should be 'talked with an advisor'), and 'consider to give me' (should be 'consider giving me'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some issues with sentence fragments and capitalization after periods. While these errors are noticeable, they do not significantly hinder the reader's understanding of your request. Focusing on article usage and verb patterns will help improve your accuracy.
