Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I want to reduce my working hours because I have opted to pursue a Master's degree. It's my dream to have a master's degree in the Computer science field to create web applications and gaming sites.

I have college on Tuesdays and Wednesday during 9 am to 12 pm in the mornings, and during the afternoon I have coursework to complete. Except that I can work the remaining hours in the store.

I have a great suggestion: our store does not have a website. Nowadays, people do search for hotels on mobile. My computer science background will help the store in terms of creating a beautiful website and promotions for the store, and also will help us to check the reviews by tracking the orders of the customers and their opinions on the food through the website, where I learnt how to create the website for our store and also to calculate the expenses through an Excel sheet to have the turnovers.

Yours faithfully,

Tim

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your reason for reducing hours (pursuing a Master's degree), specified your availability (Tuesdays and Wednesdays), and described the potential benefit to your employer (creating a website and tracking orders). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a boss. To improve, ensure your explanation of the benefits is more concise and professional; the final paragraph is quite long and slightly repetitive, which makes the connection between your studies and the business benefits feel a bit cluttered. Overall, you have successfully completed the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific part of the prompt. You use some basic cohesive devices, such as 'Nowadays' and 'Except that'. However, the flow within the final paragraph is somewhat disjointed. The transition between discussing the website and mentioning Excel sheets feels abrupt. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider range of linking words and ensure that each sentence flows naturally into the next. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'pursue', 'coursework', and 'promotions'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'Except that I can work', which is not the most natural way to express this idea. Additionally, 'have the turnovers' is not a standard business collocation. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise business-related terminology would enhance your score. Focus on using collocations that sound more natural in a professional context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I have college on Tuesdays and Wednesday' (should be plural 'Wednesdays') and 'people do search for hotels' (the 'do' is unnecessary here). The sentence structure in the final paragraph is quite long and slightly confusing, which impacts the clarity of your message. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your intent, they occur frequently enough to keep the score in the 6.0 range. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and avoiding overly long, run-on sentences will help improve your accuracy.
