Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
Good morning! I hope you are doing well. I am writing to request that if you could reduce my working hours to study part time. Firstly, I am really very interested in studying the 'Wound Care Program' at Niagara University. The course length is maximum for 6 months, which is the full-time study course.
Secondly, during this course, I would be able to work part-time hours. I would like to give you my availability for work. So I would be available on every Tuesdays and alternate weekends. I would be grateful if you could fix my schedule according to my availability.
Lastly, there are many perks associated with this program which I am going to study. As I am working as a RN at your organization, this course will equip me with very important skills and knowledge about wound care. I would be very proficient at wound care and will provide training to my colleagues as well.
Please respond me at your earliest convenience. Thank you for your time and understanding.
Yours sincerely,
ABC

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You explained your reason for the request (the 'Wound Care Program'), specified your desired working hours (Tuesdays and alternate weekends), and described the benefits to your employer (gaining skills to train colleagues). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure your introduction is more direct; for example, instead of 'if you could reduce', simply state 'I am writing to request a reduction in my working hours'. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the response is well-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. You use transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through your points. While these are effective, they are somewhat mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases or use more sophisticated cohesive devices to connect your ideas more fluidly. For instance, instead of starting every paragraph with a sequence marker, you could integrate the transition into the sentence structure. The progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using professional terms like 'availability', 'organization', and 'proficient'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'maximum for 6 months' and 'perks associated with this program', which sound slightly informal or unnatural in this context. You also have a minor error in 'respond me', which should be 'respond to me'. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and professional phrasing suitable for a workplace request.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as the redundant 'if' in 'I am writing to request that if you could reduce' and the phrasing 'the course length is maximum for 6 months'. Additionally, 'I am going to study' could be more concisely expressed. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout. To achieve a higher score, focus on eliminating redundant words and ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage.
