Student answer (Band 7.0)
You visited a museum recently with an elderly relative. However, he or she had difficulty walking around the museum. Write a letter to the manager and say:
- Whom did you visit the museum with?
- What problems did he or she face?
- Suggest a solution that will improve the museum visit experience for an elderly person.
Dear Manager,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express constructive feedback regarding my experience on my recent visit to a city museum.
I visited a premise with my grand mother. While our overall experience was good, we faced several difficulties during our visit. To illustrate, my grand mother has difficulties in climbing and disembarking the stairs. Meanwhile our trip, she struggled a lot when moving to upper floors due to noticeable malfunctioning in the electric-powered stairs. Not only did she face problems with climbing stairs, but she also had difficulties walking around the museum.
I kindly request you to introduce a few indoor vehicles and wheel-chairs, in order to help senior citizens or people who can not walk.
Moreover, I would also assert you to maintain the stairs and perform preventive maintenance on reguler basis.
I hope my misgivings would help you to improve the customer experience and facilities at your museum.
Yours sincerely,
Ravi Mangukiya.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student has failed to address the task prompt provided in the instructions. The prompt explicitly asked for a letter to a boss regarding a request to reduce working hours for part-time study. However, the student wrote a letter to a museum manager regarding accessibility issues for an elderly relative. While the response is well-developed and covers the bullet points of the museum scenario, it is entirely off-topic regarding the actual task instructions. According to IELTS criteria, a response that is completely off-topic must be penalized significantly in Task Achievement as it does not fulfill the requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
Despite the off-topic content, the letter is logically organized. The student uses clear paragraphing to separate the introduction, the description of the problem, the proposed solutions, and the closing. Cohesive devices such as 'To illustrate', 'Meanwhile', 'Not only... but also', and 'Moreover' are used effectively to link ideas. The progression of the argument is clear, and the letter follows a standard formal structure. If the content had matched the prompt, this would be a strong performance in terms of structure and flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey their message clearly. Phrases like 'constructive feedback', 'disembarking the stairs', 'preventive maintenance', and 'misgivings' show an attempt to use more sophisticated language. There are minor errors, such as 'reguler' (spelling) and 'assert you' (incorrect collocation for 'request' or 'urge'), but these do not impede communication. The vocabulary is generally appropriate for a formal letter, showing a good level of control despite the mismatch with the task prompt.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over grammar, with only occasional errors. For example, 'my grand mother has difficulties in climbing' is slightly awkward, and 'Meanwhile our trip' should be 'During our trip'. However, the majority of the sentences are error-free and easy to follow. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the formal tone is maintained throughout. The grammatical control is solid, though the range of complex structures could be further expanded for a higher band.
