Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear sir,

I hope you are doing well.I am writing regarding my working hours that i need to reduce my working hours because i have enrolled in a parttime study programme.

Recently, i have enrolled in a programme which related to the food and safety certification which benefits my career in food industry

Over the past few days , I have noticed that i cant manage my working hours and study time together. This has caused considerable inconvenience. As i am working in a restaurant, this certification will benefit our company and our crew. I believe this matter should be addressed as soon as possible.

I would appreciate it if you could adjust my working hours from 5 pm to 10 pm , Monday to friday, as i can attend my classes and work without any issues.

Thankyou for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the reason for the request (part-time study), specify the desired hours (5 pm to 10 pm), and explain the benefit to the employer (food safety certification). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a boss. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For example, while you mention the certification will benefit the company, expanding slightly on how this would specifically improve restaurant operations would have strengthened the response. Overall, the task is fully addressed in a clear and professional manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure, moving from the purpose of the letter to the specific request and the benefits. Paragraphing is used, though the letter is quite short, which makes the structure feel a bit compressed. You use some cohesive devices like 'Recently' and 'As I am working', which help the flow. However, the transition between the reason for the request and the specific hours could be smoother. Some sentences are quite short and choppy, which slightly affects the overall flow. Using a wider variety of linking words would improve the cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message effectively. Phrases like 'enrolled in a part-time study programme' and 'considerable inconvenience' are appropriate for the context. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'programme which related to', which should be 'programme related to'. Additionally, there is a lack of variety in your vocabulary, with some repetition of basic terms. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise professional terminology related to your industry and avoid repetitive sentence starters.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several punctuation and capitalization errors, such as the frequent failure to capitalize 'I' and missing spaces after periods (e.g., 'well.I', 'programme. Recently'). These are consistent errors that detract from the professional quality of the letter. While your meaning is always clear, the grammatical control is inconsistent. You should focus on proofreading for basic mechanics like capitalization and subject-verb agreement to ensure your writing is polished and error-free.
