Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear boss

I hope you are doing good. I am writing this letter to request you to reduce my working hours. Actually, I got admission in the university to study artificial intelligence course. You know that I was eagerly waiting for this time to fulfill my dream due to which i need to clear some exams.

My classes are going to start from next week due to which I am unable to work full time. So, I can work only 6 hours a day because I joined evening batch because their are no more seats left in the morning batch even my time was clashing in the morning with the job timing. Moreover, my classes will be starting at 3pm. That is why I would like to work from 8am to 2pm.

As I am going to learn technology, I would like to let you know the benefits of my part-time studies to your business. It will help to grow your business and you can introduce more advanced features of using artificial intelligence in your offices. Your business will be increase with the smartness of the modern technology.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Yours sincerely

Anjali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the reason for your request (university studies), specified the desired working hours (8am to 2pm), and outlined the benefits to your employer regarding artificial intelligence. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of benefits is more specific; for example, instead of saying 'it will help to grow your business', you could mention a specific task or project where your new skills could be applied. Overall, the task is fully covered.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the request to the scheduling details and finally to the benefits. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'That is why' to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is somewhat inconsistent, with some sentences appearing as isolated blocks. To improve, ensure each paragraph has a clear thematic focus. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Strengthening the variety of linking words would help the flow of the letter feel more natural and professional.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'artificial intelligence', 'cooperation', and 'admission'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'Your business will be increase' (should be 'will increase' or 'will be enhanced') and 'their are' (should be 'there are'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Incorporating more professional collocations related to business and academic study would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I got admission in the university' (should be 'I have been admitted to the university') and 'due to which' used repetitively. There are also punctuation and spelling issues, such as 'their' instead of 'there'. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentence connectors will improve your accuracy.
