Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Boss,

It is an unfortunate situation that I have to reduce my hours at work due to my part time study that I got enrolled last month in "Cyber Tech Course". I have been trying hard to balance my schedule with respect to work and study but it results in peak mental pressure and lack of concerntration.

I would like to request you to shift my timings from weekdays to weekends. During weekdays I can prepare my assignments and research on my thesis on "Cyber Tech" which is realted to my current position as "Business Analyst"

Studying partime can aid to complete my course within two months and will get the certification. It will result in expansion for business and to explore oppurtunities for your company. I can assure you to become the asset for the organisation.

It is my humble to consider my request, together we can make a difference.

Yours Truly,

Ramanjot Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the need to reduce hours due to study, specify the desired shift to weekends, and outline how the certification will benefit the employer. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal request, although the opening 'Dear Boss' is slightly informal; 'Dear [Name]' or 'Dear Manager' would be more professional. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To improve, ensure that the connection between your studies and the company's specific business goals is explained with slightly more professional detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, moving from the problem to the request and finally the benefits. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'During weekdays' and 'It will result in', which help link your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is a bit abrupt. Overall, the structure is clear and serves the purpose of the letter well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'certification', 'organisation', and 'position'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'concerntration', 'realted', 'partime', and 'oppurtunities', which slightly detract from the professional quality of the writing. Additionally, some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'unfortunate situation' or 'peak mental pressure'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure careful proofreading to eliminate spelling mistakes, which are noticeable in this response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'study that I got enrolled last month' should be 'course I enrolled in last month', and 'It is my humble to consider' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'I humbly request that you consider'. There are also minor issues with article usage and preposition placement. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your request, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct sentence construction will help improve your accuracy.
