Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter as I want to you to decrease my hours in order to study part time. Moreover, I am not getting enough time to read and complete my assignments. It is very stressful for me even though I am earning some money, but it is really important to achieve goals.

I would love to work in your company and I wanna request you to provide me some flexible hours as I have classes on Mondays and Tuesdays and rest of the days I can work so, you are able to schedule me according to that. And also I am studying more in this field to improve myself. It would be more useful for me and your company too.

I request you to reduce my hours so I can study well and be more confident in my field.

Kind regards,

Yesha Sharma

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained the need to reduce hours for study, specified the days you are unavailable (Mondays and Tuesdays), and touched upon the benefits to the employer. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the benefit to the employer is mentioned only briefly as 'it would be more useful for me and your company too' without explaining how your specific studies will add value to the workplace. To improve, try to elaborate on how the new skills you are learning will directly contribute to your current role or the company's efficiency.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear opening and closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'even though', and 'And also' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more distinct to separate the different requirements of the task. The use of 'And also' at the start of a sentence is slightly informal for a business letter. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph focuses on a single clear theme would help elevate your score in this area.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your needs clearly. You use some relevant phrases like 'part-time studies' and 'schedule me'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on informal language, such as 'wanna', which is inappropriate for a formal letter to a boss. To reach a higher band, aim to use more precise, professional vocabulary and avoid colloquialisms. For instance, instead of 'wanna request', you could use 'would like to formally request'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I want to you to decrease' (extra 'to') and 'rest of the days I can work so, you are able to schedule me' (punctuation and phrasing issues). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they do occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentence structures will help you achieve a higher level of accuracy.
