Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to request you to lower my working hours in my schedule.

As of now, I planning to start part time study from end of this month, it is difficult for me to work according to my current allocated hours.

I would be grateful if you can make a change and try to start my shift as soon as possible I mean in early morning, but I need to attend my classes in afternoon time from 2PM, however I can work for evening shift from 5.30PM to onwards.

I decided to take a course to enhance my skills and ability, which directly contributes positively to my performace and I will get increament soon. As I am starting a study part-time, I will handle my all repsponsibilty towards my daily task without any complaints, while studying for enhacing my skills can direclty help your business to grow fast and running effectively by the extra-ordinary employee.

I would be grateful if you could send me a updated schdeule as per my avaibility.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Yours Faithfully,

Prarthana Patil.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: the reason for the request, the preferred hours, and the benefits to the employer. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a supervisor. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of how the studies benefit the employer is a bit repetitive and lacks specific detail regarding the nature of the course or the skills being acquired. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the study and the workplace is more clearly articulated and professional in tone.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the request. There is a clear progression from the purpose of the letter to the specific scheduling needs and the benefits. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For example, the transition between the request and the benefits could be smoother. Some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as the transition from the shift request to the study benefits. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the flow of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. There are some attempts at more sophisticated vocabulary, such as 'enhance' and 'contributes positively,' but there are also several spelling errors (e.g., 'performace,' 'repsponsibilty,' 'enhacing,' 'schdeule,' 'avaibility'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To improve, focus on using precise collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of professional terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'I planning to' (missing auxiliary verb), 'in afternoon time' (missing article), and 'from 5.30PM to onwards' (incorrect prepositional usage). Additionally, there are issues with punctuation and sentence boundaries. While these errors rarely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
