Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Saha,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter regarding to make a request for reducing my work shifts.
I intend to inform you that from next month, I am enrolling in Bow valley College for doing Early Childhood Education Program(level 2). As you know I have merely level 1 which allows me to work just as an Early Childhood Education assistant. And because this study will be part-time, I would like to reduce my working hours on weekly basis .
According to my schedule, my classes will be in the evenings, so i would really appreciate, if you can give me only morning shifts till 3pm. In this way, I can manage both my work as well as classes.
I want to make you assure that this study will be proven beneficial for your daycare as well. I mean to say, after getting level 2 certificate, definitely I could have more knowledge about nurturing to children.
I hope you will understand my mindset. Waiting for your response soon.
Yours Sincerely,
kamal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (enrolling in an Early Childhood Education program), specify the desired working hours (morning shifts until 3pm), and describe the benefits to your employer (gaining advanced knowledge to better nurture children). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a supervisor. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your situation and the value you bring to the daycare. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your studies and the employer's benefit is articulated with slightly more professional vocabulary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In this way' and 'According to my schedule' to link ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall progression of ideas is logical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'enrolling', 'nurturing', and 'manage'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'regarding to make a request' (should be 'regarding a request') and 'make you assure' (should be 'assure you'). The phrase 'merely level 1' is slightly unnatural in this context. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word choice. Expanding your vocabulary to include more professional collocations would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'regarding to make', 'from next month, I am enrolling', and 'this study will be proven beneficial' (should be 'will prove beneficial'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization issues, such as 'i' instead of 'I'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive versus active voice, as well as ensuring consistent capitalization.
