Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear boss,
I would like to request you to reduce my working hours because I want to study part time. I felt tired after long working hours and not able to focus on my study.
Furthermore, I would like to work in the morning instead of afternoon and evening. I am going to study marketing course and it is 3 month course. If I learned this course then it would be beneficial to the company as well. There are various things to learn in this course like promoting products and digital marketing through social media.
In addition, I would also contribute this skills to the company and you can make profits by sales through marketing by your employee which saves your money form not hiring additional team for marketing. I would finish these course within 3 months after that you can increase my working hours. Lastly I would like to study part time for marketing course as it will be beneficial in my career as well as company growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You explain the reason for the request, specify the desired hours, and outline the benefits to the employer. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of how the marketing course benefits the company is a bit repetitive and could be more professional in tone. To improve, ensure that your arguments are fully extended with more specific details rather than repeating the same points about 'beneficial to the company' multiple times. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a boss, though it could be slightly more polished.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'Lastly' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. Some transitions feel a bit forced, and the logical progression within the second paragraph could be smoother. For instance, the jump from discussing the course content to the financial benefits for the employer is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your request clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'marketing', 'digital marketing', and 'social media'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'I felt tired after long working hours' (which should be 'I have been feeling tired') and 'contribute this skills' (which should be 'contribute these skills'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing like 'beneficial to the company' and 'study part time'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'I felt tired' (tense inconsistency), 'If I learned this course' (conditional structure error), 'saves your money form not hiring' (preposition error), and 'finish these course' (pluralization error). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement, correct tense usage, and pluralization will significantly improve your accuracy.
