Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter as a request to reduce my working hours as I have recently started a course.
After completed my diploma, I am working full time with your firm as a bookkeeper for the last 1 year. I have recently started a short taxation course which require me to attend college 2 days a week and also prepare and submit assignments. Furthermore I also have to allocate minimum 6 hours every week for the self sttudy.
Class are scheduled on every Tuesday and Thursday for 10 weeks with a compulsary attendence and Wednesday for self study. Therefore I am requesting to work only on Monday & Friday which are the 2 busiest work days of the week.
After completing my study I will gain the knowledge and license to provide advise and prepare and submit tax returns for our clients. Furthermore this course will help me to expand our client base and help our clients.
Thank you for your consideration.
Kind regards,
Sahil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the reason for the request, specifying the desired hours, and describing the benefits to the employer. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a boss. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the course will help expand the client base, providing a brief, concrete example of how this would happen would have strengthened your argument. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the requirements of the task are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. Additionally, the paragraphing is functional, but the flow could be improved by ensuring that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed point. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel a bit disjointed due to the repetitive structure of the opening clauses.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'bookkeeper', 'taxation course', and 'compulsory attendance'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'sttudy' and 'attendence', and a word choice error in 'provide advise' (should be 'advice'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations related to professional development and business operations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For instance, 'After completed my diploma' should be 'After completing my diploma', and 'course which require' should be 'course which requires'. There is also a subject-verb agreement error in 'Class are scheduled' (should be 'Classes are scheduled'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on verb tenses and subject-verb agreement will significantly improve your accuracy.
