Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

My name is Harmandeep Singh. I am writing this letter to request you to reduce my working hours because I would like to study part time course at university. I am full time employed at your company and doing night shifts as a plant supervisor. My upcoming university schedule will be 12.00 pm till 4.00 pm as currently I am working till 7.00 am. I could not complete my sleep if I continue working same schedule.

Furthermore, I would like to propose new hours of working as I do not want to change my start time but wants to leave early two hours, which means the new timings I need is 7.00 pm to 5.00 am. Apart from this, I had a talk with a co-worker, and he admits to take care of my pending work, whichever will be left.

Moreover, I took a diploma in welding techniques, which is the first step to start an apprenticeship. As our company needs a licensed welders, I can assure that my education will contribute to the growth of our company.

I hope to hearing from you soon.

Yours Faithfully,

Harmandeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: explaining the reason for the request, specifying the desired hours, and describing the benefits to the employer. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a supervisor. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the explanation regarding the shift change could be slightly more precise to avoid confusion. Overall, the response effectively communicates the purpose of the letter and addresses all parts of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the request. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Apart from this', and 'Moreover' helps to guide the reader through the text. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the second paragraph ('whichever will be left') is a bit awkward. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication. You use some relevant professional terms like 'plant supervisor', 'apprenticeship', and 'licensed welders'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'study part time course' (should be 'a part-time course') and 'admits to take care' (should be 'has agreed to take care'). Expanding your range of collocations and ensuring more precise word usage would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am full time employed' (should be 'I am employed full-time'), 'wants to leave' (should be 'want to leave'), and 'I hope to hearing' (should be 'I hope to hear'). Additionally, there are some issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score.
