Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear manager,

I hope you are doing well! I am writing to request about the reduction of my working hours in order to finish part-time course which I enrolled in a month ago.

I would like to reduce working hours because I have to attend in person classes everyday starting at 4 PM. Since I am working full-time from 9 AM to 6 PM I find it challenging to maintain both work and study balance, therefore, I will be delighted if I can work 5 hours daily during the morning and noon time, and thereafter I can focus on my study in order to get good grades. Furthermore, I will be fully available on weekends as my classes are not scheduled on Saturday and Sunday.

I am delighted to inform you that I have enrolled in Clinical research course that will help me developing skills such as problem solving skill, team work and collaboration. Those skill ultimately will be helpful to increase productivity of my work towards our company. I look forward to hearing from you.

Your faithfully,

Yash.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the reason for the request (enrolling in a course), specified the desired working hours (5 hours daily, morning/noon), and described the benefits to the employer (improved problem-solving and productivity). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your situation and the value you bring to the company. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your studies and the specific needs of your current role is even more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'furthermore', 'since', and 'therefore' to link your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of transition words. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the request for hours and the benefits to the employer could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are slightly repetitive in structure. Overall, the message is easy to follow and the progression of ideas is logical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'reduction', 'challenging', 'collaboration', and 'productivity'. There are some minor collocation errors, such as 'attend in person classes' (should be 'attend in-person classes') and 'work and study balance' (should be 'work-study balance'). You also have a minor error in the sign-off ('Your faithfully' should be 'Yours faithfully'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding your use of topic-specific collocations would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'finish part-time course' (missing an article: 'a part-time course'), 'help me developing' (should be 'help me develop'), and 'Those skill' (should be 'Those skills'). Additionally, the sentence 'I will be delighted if I can work 5 hours daily during the morning and noon time' is slightly awkward. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
