Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to inform you that I am planning to do part-time study in the upcoming days.
As you know, I joined your company right after completing my graduation as a computer analyst. To meet the contemporary society level, I want to pursue my education further to enhance my productivity level. Therefore, I request you to make some amendments in my working hours so that I will not face any convenience in my studies.
As you aware that, currently I am working from morning 9:00am to evening 6:00pm at your corporation. Can you reduce my working hours? I will manage to do part-time job from 2:00pm to 7:00pm.
I would appreciate if you could lend me some hours for my education. Moreover, I assure you that this post-graduation diploma would be proved beneficial for both of us. I will gain more professional skills to handle all the situations in a well organised way.
I hope you will understand my situation. I am looking forward to your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Gursimran

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points: the reason for the request, the preferred hours, and the benefits to the employer. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a boss. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of how the studies will benefit the employer is quite brief and could be expanded with more specific details regarding the skills to be acquired. Additionally, the request for hours is slightly confusing, as you mention working from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm, which contradicts the standard full-time schedule you are currently working. Overall, the task is addressed, but the clarity of the proposal could be improved.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the different points of the request. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Moreover', and 'As you know' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the transition between the current schedule and the proposed schedule could be smoother to avoid confusion for the reader. Overall, the letter is easy to follow and maintains a consistent flow throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'contemporary society', 'amendments', and 'professional skills'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'face any convenience' is incorrect; you likely meant 'inconvenience'. Additionally, 'lend me some hours' is not the standard way to request a schedule change; 'request a reduction in my hours' would be more professional. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'As you aware that' (should be 'As you are aware') and 'would be proved beneficial' (should be 'would prove beneficial'). The phrase 'in the upcoming days' is also slightly unnatural in this context. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive versus active voice in formal requests.
