Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I hope you are doing good. I am writing to seek permission for reduce my working hours, as I am willing to allocate more time into study.
Since I joined as a full-time employee, I spend almost all day at work-place. Recently, I enrolled in Mastercam programming course, which delivers online. For preparing this certification program, I am aiming to invest minimum of 20 hours from my daily routine. As I spend almost 40 hours at work, I cannot focus properly in this short-term course. Therefore, I am requesting to change my type of employment from full-time to part-time.
For part-time working culture, I can work during evening time from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM during weekdays. It not only allows to focus properly on my new subject but also work peacefully without any stress.
Since I work as a machinist, this software learning will help to learn CNC programming effectively. Once I finish this certification, I can do programming also with setup, which currently lacking during the evening shift.
I hope you would do not mind my change of working hours.
Yours sincerely,
Vivek Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (enrolling in a Mastercam course), specify the desired working hours (6:00 PM to 10:00 PM), and explain the benefit to the employer (improved CNC programming skills). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a supervisor. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands both your motivation and the professional value of your studies. The response is fully focused on the task requirements throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Since', and 'not only... but also' to link ideas. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical, and the transition between the request and the specific hours could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including topic-specific terms like 'machinist', 'CNC programming', and 'certification program'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'reduce my working hours' (should be 'reducing') and 'delivers online' (should be 'is delivered online'). While you successfully communicate your message, the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on basic phrasing. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive structures.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'seek permission for reduce' (should be 'to reduce'), 'which delivers online' (passive voice error), and 'I hope you would do not mind' (incorrect auxiliary usage). While these errors do not impede communication and the meaning remains clear, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on verb patterns and passive voice construction would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
