Student answer (Band 7.0)
You recently used a company to help you move your furniture and possessions to your new apartment. The removal company has now asked for your feedback about the service they provided.
Write a letter to the removal company.
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter to provide my valuable feedback about the service provided by your company.
I have recently moved to a new apartment. I was very concerned about my furniture and possessions until one of my friends recommended me to use the service from your removal company. I have contacted one of your staff members, and they explained the complete process about the number of employees and charges, which was incredibly satisfying. I agree with the service. The employees worked really well. One of the staff members, Steve, explained to me about the safe transfer of my furniture and helped me with the packing of my belongings, which was really helpful.
Overall, I was very satisfied with the service; however, there was one thing that made me a little disappointed. While moving the furniture, one of the employees accidentally broke my vase, which my grandmother gifted to me on my 18th birthday. Except for this aspect, the rest of the experience was very good. I would definitely recommend this service to my friends and family.
Thank you for everything, and I hope you have a good day.
Kind regards,
Supreet gill

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response is completely off-topic. The prompt explicitly asked for a letter to a boss regarding a request to reduce working hours for part-time study. Instead, the student wrote a letter to a removal company providing feedback on a furniture moving service. Because the student failed to address any of the bullet points or the core purpose of the task, the task achievement score is significantly impacted. While the letter is well-structured as a piece of writing, it does not fulfill the requirements of the specific task provided in the instructions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is well-organized with clear paragraphing. There is a logical progression of ideas, starting with the purpose of the letter, moving to the positive experience, mentioning a specific issue, and concluding with a recommendation. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'however', and 'Except for this aspect' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text. Despite the content being irrelevant to the prompt, the internal structure and flow of the writing are coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is adequate for a general letter. The student uses a range of functional language such as 'valuable feedback', 'concerned', 'recommended', and 'accidentally broke'. There is some repetition of 'service' and 'furniture', but the word choice is generally natural and appropriate for the context of a complaint or feedback letter. There are no significant spelling errors, and the language used is clear and precise enough to convey the intended meaning without difficulty.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a good control of grammar. There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I was very concerned about my furniture and possessions until one of my friends recommended me to use the service'. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the tone is appropriate for a formal letter. While there are minor slips, such as 'recommended me to use' (should be 'recommended that I use'), these errors do not impede communication. The grammatical accuracy is consistent throughout the response.
