Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Zeel,
I hope you're doing well. I am writing this letter regarding to reduce my working hours at the job.
Firstly, I would like to cut my working days because I am planning to study in Management related certification course as a part time. Furthermore, nowadays there are lots of competition in the job market. Therefore, I want to upgrade my current position in this company. At the moment, my current role is Quality Control Analyst and I want to become an Manager in this role. So, I decided to enroll myself in Management program.
Secondly, I would like to inform you I work only 3 days in a week and 24 hours per week. However, I will have to go to college on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. So, I work only Friday, Saturday and Sunday as I am usually working on these days and on Thursday probably I will have some assignments or real-life project so I will do that.
Lastly, if I am working less hours at my job so that way I can improve problem solving skills as well as I can learn about leadership. Furthermore, I have noticed since last year we don't have any manager in our lab so I want to grab this opportunity.
I am very thankful if you allowed me to do this!
Yours sincerely,
Hetkumar Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining the reason for the reduction in hours, specifying the desired schedule, and describing the benefits to the employer. The tone is appropriate for a professional letter. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation of how your studies will benefit the employer could be more specific regarding how your new skills will directly improve lab operations. Despite this, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader understands your request and the rationale behind it. To improve, ensure that the benefits to the employer are more explicitly linked to the company's goals rather than just your personal development.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing, which helps the reader follow your request. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore' to transition between ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the sentence 'So, I work only Friday, Saturday and Sunday as I am usually working on these days' is slightly repetitive and confusing. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this', 'that') is precise would help elevate the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'Quality Control Analyst', 'enroll', and 'certification course'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'Management related certification course' (should be 'a management-related certification course') and 'I am writing this letter regarding to reduce' (should be 'regarding reducing'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and prepositions. Expanding your vocabulary to include more professional collocations would enhance the overall quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies throughout the text. Examples include 'I work only 3 days in a week' (should be 'three days a week'), 'I am usually working on these days' (tense usage is slightly awkward), and 'I am very thankful if you allowed me to do this' (should be 'I would be very grateful if you would allow me'). These errors are frequent but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
