Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

Myself Yashraj, I am working as a machinist in production department, my employee id: [redacted phone]. I am writing this to let you know that I am planning to start a part time course next month for CAD designing software. Due to which I will be unable to work full time.

This course is very important for me to advance my career one step ahead. After completing this three month course I will be awarded by a designer certificate. For this I need to attend the classes on weekdays from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. So, can you please allow me to work part time for next three months.

I can work in evening shifts on weekdays and also available full day on weekends. As I mentioned earlier that after completing this course I can start working as a designer with a certification. Working as a machinist I can also help the company as a junior designer and provide support in all the minor projects whenever you need.

A swift response will be appreciated from you and I will be grateful for you support. Thanks.

Yours Sincerely,

Yashraj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (CAD course), specify the desired working hours (evenings and weekends), and describe the benefit to the employer (gaining a junior designer). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your situation and the value you bring to the company. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are more standard for a formal business letter, such as 'Dear Mr. [Name]' or 'Yours sincerely'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the request and the justification. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Due to which' and 'As I mentioned earlier', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. To improve, try to vary your linking words further to create a more natural flow between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using industry-specific terms like 'machinist', 'CAD designing software', and 'certification'. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is somewhat repetitive and lacks a wider range of sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions. For example, phrases like 'very important' and 'help the company' are quite basic. Incorporating more precise academic or professional vocabulary would elevate your score. Overall, the language used is accurate enough to convey your message without any confusion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'After completing this three month course I will be awarded...'. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'Myself Yashraj' (which is informal and grammatically incorrect; use 'My name is Yashraj'), 'Due to which I will be...' (a sentence fragment), and 'grateful for you support' (should be 'your'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and avoiding sentence fragments to improve your accuracy.
