IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You would like to reduce your working hours in order to study part time.

Write a letter to your boss. In your letter

  • explain why you want to reduce your working hours
  • say which hours you would like to work
  • describe how your part-time studies would benefit your employer

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Gupta,

I am writing to express my interest in part-time study more as compared to working in an office.

I am pursuing a computer course, and I usually do not get time for my study. I request you to reduce my working hours so that I can give more time to my study.

Additionally, if you allow me, I can work from home at night as well as in the evening. The reason behind this is that during the daytime I can attend my classes and can do more practice.

Now, my course will be helpful for my future position in my job. Like now, I am handling data and fulfilling other duties with the help of a pen and a paper. But after the completion of this course, I will be able to handle everything on the computer, which will save time and money.

I look forward to hearing a response from you on this matter at your earliest convenience.

Yours sincerely,

Amarjeet Kour.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained the need for study time, proposed specific working hours (evenings and nights), and described the benefits to the employer regarding computerization. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For example, the explanation of how the course benefits the employer is a bit simplistic, focusing on 'pen and paper' versus 'computer'. To reach a higher band, you should expand on how these new skills will specifically improve office efficiency or productivity. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the opening sentence is slightly awkward and could be more direct.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'Additionally' and 'But after the completion of this course', which help link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be smoother. Some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the connection between the opening statement and the rest of the letter could be improved to ensure a more professional, cohesive tone throughout the correspondence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your request clearly. You use some relevant terms such as 'pursuing', 'completion', and 'at your earliest convenience'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances where word choice could be more precise. For example, 'interest in part-time study more as compared to working' is slightly unnatural. Expanding your vocabulary to include more professional collocations would enhance the quality of your writing. The spelling is accurate throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I usually do not get time for my study' (should be 'my studies') and 'I am writing to express my interest in part-time study more as compared to working' (which is syntactically awkward). You use some complex structures, but they are not always perfectly controlled. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the use of comparative structures to sound more natural and professional.
