You would like to reduce your working hours in order to study part time.

Write a letter to your boss. In your letter

  • say which hours you would like to work
  • describe how your part-time studies would benefit your employer

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Miss Alyssa,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to request you to limit my work hours. In the middle of August, my classes for Early Childhood Educator Level 2 course started. I chose only three subjects for the fall session in my part time study. The classes are online but in the afternoons and evenings only. In this way, I am available for morning hours from 8 am to 2 pm.

I have been thinking about upgrading my Level 2 since January because it can help me to promote the Lead teacher position. Also, the increment of pay and government top up is a plus point of my studies. This could benefit you as our daycare centre requires more Level 2 ECEs according to the licensing rule. So, instead of hiring a new employee or a fresher. This could be better option to give a chance to the existing employee who is already familiar with the expectations of work.

I would really appreciate your understanding to consider my request.

Thank you so much. I will be waiting for your response.

Yours sincerely,

Amanjot

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (studies), specify the desired working hours (8 am to 2 pm), and articulate how your professional development benefits the employer (meeting licensing requirements). The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a supervisor. To improve, you could expand slightly on the specific benefits to the daycare, such as how your new knowledge will directly improve classroom quality, which would further strengthen the persuasive nature of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In this way', 'Also', and 'So', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between the second and third sentences in the second paragraph is slightly abrupt. Using more varied linking words or phrases would improve the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'upgrading', 'increment', and 'licensing rule' effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'promote the Lead teacher position' (should be 'attain' or 'qualify for') and 'fresher' (which is informal and less common in this context). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise professional collocations would elevate the score. The spelling is generally accurate throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical errors, such as 'request you to limit' (should be 'request that you limit') and 'This could be better option' (missing an article: 'a better option'). Additionally, the sentence 'So, instead of hiring a new employee or a fresher' is a sentence fragment. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and consistent use of articles.
