Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Manager,
Hope you are doing well.
I am writing this email to request for the reduction of working hours so that I can pursue the part time studies which helps for my professional growth.
Recently, I enrolled in a part-time project management course. It is held alternative evening classes in a week. This course helps me to gain more knowledge on how to deal with the clients and how to manage the orders and deliver it within the deadlines.
I would like to work from 9am to 2pm in the mornings on the alternative days in a week and work full time in the other days.
The knowledge and the skills I gain it from the course would help to communicate well with my team members and also help me to organize my work in an orderly manner to meet deadlines which improves the productivity and make me to contribute for the company's future.
Thank you for considering my request. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this with you at your convenience.
Yours Sincerely,
Y. Veena.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain the reason for the request (professional development via a project management course), specify the desired working hours, and articulate the benefits to the employer. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a manager. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the task requirements. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail regarding the 'alternative days' to ensure the employer has a clear understanding of the proposed schedule, but overall, the task is fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a professional closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Recently', 'The knowledge and the skills', and 'also' to link ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are less mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'pursue', 'professional growth', and 'deadlines'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'It is held alternative evening classes' (should be 'It involves evening classes') and 'make me to contribute' (should be 'enable me to contribute'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'request for the reduction' (should be 'request a reduction'), 'gain it from the course' (the 'it' is redundant), and 'in the other days' (should be 'on the other days'). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions, and try to vary your sentence structure further.
