Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I want to reduce my working hours to build my skills in project management. This 6 weeks long course will cover several modules of leadership skills and mindset required to lead a big project. Also, it will cover key insights of important prospects such as material and human resources management.

I would prefer working at 10 in the morning till 6 in the evening, because the online lectures are 1 hour long, starting at 8 in the morning. This will help me to attend the lectures with more productivity.

Once we approach this fall, there are capital projects one after the other. This course will help me to lead them and improve my interpersonal skills, human resource & raw materials allocation. With the knowledge gained, I will ensure better effectiveness and greater outcomes. These results will not only gain popularity but also improve the faith of management in the eyes of on-floor workers.

Yours faithfully,

Yash Mehta.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the reason for your request, specified your preferred working hours, and articulated the benefits to your employer. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific project management skills you intend to acquire, as the current explanation is a bit brief. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader is left with no ambiguity regarding your intentions or the proposed schedule.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'Once we approach', and 'With the knowledge gained' to link your sentences. However, the transition between the first and second paragraphs could be smoother. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words or phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly, as some of the current transitions feel slightly mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'interpersonal skills', 'allocation', and 'effectiveness'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'important prospects' (which is slightly unnatural in this context) and 'gain popularity' (which sounds a bit informal for a business letter). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise business-related collocations would enhance your score. You avoid repetition and maintain a professional tone throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are grammatically accurate and easy to follow. There are a few minor errors, such as '6 weeks long course' (should be 'six-week course') and '10 in the morning till 6 in the evening' (which could be more formally phrased as 'from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.'). Despite these small slips, your grammar does not impede communication, and you show a good command of basic sentence construction.
