Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hello John,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing to inform you that from next months, I am going to my further study in Algonquin College as part student. I am going to pursue HVAC diploma program, which will take eight months to complete.

As per the offer letter terms and conditions, I have to attend the classes in the evening time between 16:00 to 20:00. I would like to request you to reschedule my working hours in the mornings. Your small favour will help me to complete this program without any interruptions.

As we are all aware that skilled trade jobs are in high demanding nowadays. After earning this diploma certificate, I would like to work with our company to address the labour shortage. Along with it, this movement will help me to upgrade my career opportunities. Any help would be appreciated.

I look forward to your prompt response.

Kind regards,

Jashanveer Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (pursuing an HVAC diploma), specify the desired working hours (mornings), and describe the benefit to the employer (addressing labour shortages with new skills). The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a supervisor. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the purpose of the letter immediately. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your studies and the company's specific needs is even more explicitly linked to show a deeper understanding of the professional context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the announcement of the study plan to the request for schedule changes and finally the benefits for the company. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'As per', 'As we are all aware', and 'Along with it' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, the use of some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct points, which helps the reader navigate the letter easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'pursue', 'reschedule', and 'labour shortage'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'from next months' (should be 'next month'), 'as part student' (should be 'as a part-time student'), and 'high demanding' (should be 'in high demand'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that pluralization and article usage are consistent with standard English conventions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the relative clause in 'which will take eight months to complete'. There are several grammatical slips, including 'I am going to my further study' (should be 'I am going to pursue further studies') and 'between 16:00 to 20:00' (should be 'between 16:00 and 20:00'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely cause confusion or impede the reader's understanding. To achieve a higher band, aim for greater accuracy in verb patterns and prepositional phrases, and ensure that your sentence construction remains error-free for the majority of the text.
