Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing a letter to request you about reducing my work hours as recently I have enrolled in a part time study in field of pelvic health physiotherapy.

I am going to study a pelvic health of women in upcoming month. This course is four months long and required to attend college for this duration 3 days a week. Although I have master degrees in this field, it it very crucial to attend lab which is in person. Therefore, I need few days of off every week until four months.

It would be great if you can give me flexible working days like Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays I would be able to work. I am flexible whole day on these days.

Study in women pelvic health will be beneficial for our clinic as it will drastically increase patient flow. Our clinic has numerous branches so I would happy to share my knowledge with my colleagues which again improves clinic reputation.

I am waiting to hear from you back. thank you in advance

Yours Faithfully,

krishna

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (part-time study in pelvic health), specify the desired schedule (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays), and articulate the benefits to the employer (increased patient flow and knowledge sharing). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a boss. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your studies and the employer's benefit is more explicitly detailed, perhaps by mentioning how specific techniques could be applied to current clinic operations to improve patient outcomes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition between the request and the benefits could be smoother. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in addition to this') rather than relying on simple sentence structures to connect ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using subject-specific terms like 'pelvic health physiotherapy' and 'patient flow'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'request you about' (should be 'request a reduction in') and 'flexible whole day' (should be 'available all day'). There are also minor errors like 'study a pelvic health' (should be 'study pelvic health'). To improve, focus on using more precise professional terminology and ensuring that collocations are natural and grammatically sound.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'I am writing a letter to request you about reducing' (awkward phrasing), 'it it very crucial' (repetition/typo), and 'I would happy to share' (missing verb 'be'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor issues with sentence boundaries and missing articles. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of verb patterns and article usage.
