Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
Hope you are doing great
I am writing this letter to inform you that I want to do reduce my working hours as I am not able to concentrate properly on my studies. I am not giving time to academics as per expectations. Reason being reducing hours is that after 2 months I have internship for my program. I am focusing on my studies to learn something new that I will implement at my workplace.
I would like to say that I will be available for work on weekends so that I can fully put my dedication towards my course in learning things. Furthermore, weekends schedule will not interrupt with my studies.
This study will help me get more knowledge about how to operate forklift and doing inventory. This supply chain management diploma will be beneficial for you as well on work as I will do help you in doing inventory at work.
I hope you will help in supporting this and would reduce my working hours.
Regards
Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain the reason for the request (studies and internship), specify the desired hours (weekends), and describe the benefits to the employer (inventory and forklift skills). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a boss. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of how the diploma benefits the employer could be more professional and detailed. To improve, ensure that your arguments are fully expanded to demonstrate a clear professional benefit, rather than just stating the tasks you will perform.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'This study', which help the flow of information. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is a bit abrupt. Some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as 'Reason being reducing hours is that...', which affects the overall flow. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would improve the cohesion of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'dedication', 'implement', and 'inventory'. However, there are some awkward phrasings and word choices, such as 'I am not giving time to academics' and 'I will do help you'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations and professional business terminology appropriate for a formal request letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I want to do reduce my working hours' (incorrect verb usage) and 'weekends schedule will not interrupt with my studies' (missing article and incorrect preposition). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your request. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, the correct use of articles, and verb patterns following 'want to'.
