Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Corey,
I am writing to make a request to change me working hours from full time employee to a part time employee because I am planning to take a part time on layout reading and interior designing in University of Prince Edward Island.
Layouts and designs have always fascinated me, and now i m getting a chance to study deeply about printouts and interior designing through government sponsored course in UPEI . Therefore, i want the company to limit my working hours to 24. Due to the classes on last 4 days of week, I would like to work from Monday to Wednesday.
This course will not only boost my personal skills, but it will also benefit the company. Since company has been recruiting people with these specific skills, I am ready to work at some helping positing as soon as I get some knowledge of the layout.
with regards,
Gagandeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the reason for the request, specifying the desired hours, and describing the benefits to the employer. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of how your studies will benefit the company is vague, using the phrase 'helping positing' which is unclear. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific details about how the skills learned in your interior design course will translate into tangible value for your current employer.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body, and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the request from the justification and the benefits. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. While the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, the overall flow is slightly hindered by basic sentence structures and a lack of varied linking words, which prevents the response from reaching a higher level of cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have used an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'fascinated', 'recruiting', and 'specific skills'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'layout reading' and 'helping positing', which sound unnatural. Additionally, there are minor errors in capitalization (e.g., 'i m', 'i want') and some awkward phrasing. To improve, focus on using more precise professional terminology related to your field and ensure that your word choices are contextually accurate to demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'change me working hours' (should be 'my'), 'study deeply about' (should be 'study'), and 'Since company' (missing article). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of lowercase 'i' and missing commas. These errors occur frequently enough to be noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. To achieve a higher score, you should focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and consistent capitalization.
